In what ways do you hope that the Global Scholars program will expand and deepen your global perspectives?
What experiences have awakened your interest and will help you contribute to the Global Initiatives Program at Poly?
I hope the Global Scholars Program will help me understand more about other cultures and use my love of language to learn about other people. Attending the GIP trip to Italy allowed me allowed me to use my knowledge of Italian to communicate with the citizens. On a rainy school day with our Italian hosts in Latin class, I was really able to understand the key differences in how they use foreign language and as a way to communicate and learn. While the Italians were attempting to learn Latin there teacher spoke to them in English. The students were expected to learn a language with another foreign language. This was something I really enjoyed about the Italian educational system. I really enjoy learning different languages, and the idea of learning a language and then using that language to learn another language was something that I would like to do someday. I also enjoyed the cultural exchange. Staying with a host family was the best part of the trip. I liked getting to know Italian students and getting to see another school system and other ways of learning.
While on the Italy trip, we did a collaborative project with the Italian students at their school. I enjoyed this project, and It helped me to see how people of different cultures could work together. I am going on the Dominican Republic trip in March and I am hoping to have another incredible experience. This trip will let me work with kids, and practice my language skills along with experiencing another interesting culture. I believe the Global Scholars Program will be a perfect way for me to expand my knowledge of other cultures and allow me to collaborate with people for others on projects with them. The program will also help me to understand the importance what other cultures and the value of being able to communicate and collaborate with people in other places.
