Peers and Piers Dominican Republic

Peers and Piers

So far, our experience in the Dominican Republic has been incredible. Our group is very cohesive, the program directors are very positive, and the kids are absolutely amazing. The camp where we are staying is close to the center of town and has a beautiful view of the city. In the evenings it has become common for a group of us to go out in the town and explore. Some of our favorite destinations are the market (where we stock up on watermelon lollipops and cookies ‘n’ cream Oreos), Bon Helado, and the Juice Lady (where we buy juice… hehe). One of our favorite moments on the trip is a lengthy conversation we had with two guys we met on the pier. We talked at length about their interests and our own, and we even taught them some English. In our “siesta time,” we have taken to creating mashups on the ukulele – one person plays the “uke” while gradually people join in, singing different songs. Partly because it’s difficult to sleep (it’s pretty hot in our room), we have been getting up early to watch the sunrise and the city come to life. We have also been practicing lots of Spanish, and we are really trying to immerse ourselves in the culture as much as possible, living in and for the present.
