I highly enjoyed watching Nasro story depicted in the short film Brave Girl Rising. The film illustrated Nasro as the smartest girl in her school, and because of her smarts, she was the only student covered in a red burqa. The film was brilliantly made. I often time forgot that they were acting because it seemed so real. For example when Nasro and her friend were walking home and three men started ganging up on them. I was genuinely afraid these young men were going to beat them. Following the film, Martha Adams answered some questions. Some of the information she provided about the area shocked me. She stated that the average life of a person living in Dadaab was 50 years and that 25% of women were raped, which goes to show how fortunate my living situation is compared to some people in the world. What appalled me the most was the fact that Nasro's mother died at birth, and her father was shot. Both of her grandparents had been dead, and she still managed to get excellent grades. Nasro is an icon and a beacon that we should all recognize.
