Racism in Soccer

The ongoing problem of racism in the Italian Soccer League is spiraling out of control. Today Mario Balotelli (a striker for the club Brescia Calcio) stopped play and kicked the soccer ball into the stands following the abusive racial remarks from fans. According to the Guardian, the fans were yelling slurs such as "monkey and "ape." What makes this situation worse is the fact that he along with several other black players have been racially abused throughout their career in this league. Koulibaly, a defender for Napoli stopped a game and left the field because of racial slurs in 2018. The league has tried to stop the problem by closing down stadiums for two days. Unfortunately, the attempted solution did not work and the racism continued. The league needs to understand that it is ignorant fans that bringing racism into something that should be entertaining. Koulibaly said this after he stopped the game, "I just couldn't understand, in either case, why there was this kind of attitude towards me. Just like I can't justify why it happens to others." It is incredibly damaging to be living in the world we are in now.
