The Comedian Joe Wong

Joe Wong surprised me with the way he presented his comedy. I knew going into the act that he was someone that attempted to discuss the differences between America and China. therefore, I figured that his jokes would be shots at America mainly because he was from China, but in actuality through the use of humor, Wong allowed me to see the differences between China and America. For example, he made several jokes about his family and the acceptable things he could say in one country but not the other. In the middle of his act, he started talking about how his son told him that he missed him, but when he got home the kid said the same thing to his mother. Wong made this into a joke, obviously, but what was interesting to me was the fact that he used his family in so many of his jokes. He did not seem to use other races or people at the expense of his humor. One thing he said while presenting was that he had to be careful about what he said because different topics could offend different audiences. He told us that he had to change most of his comedy when presenting to Americans because they would not find his Chinese humor funny or acceptable. The same went for his Chinese audiences. Someone in the audience asked him to translate one of his Chinese jokes to English to see if we would find it as funny. The audience chuckled a little, but it was obvious that most of the people did not understand the joke. I really enjoyed him visiting us and sharing a bit of his duel culture with us.
